its funny, half these designs look like older/budget template monster designs and the others look like they are done by a fresh out of school designer with not much photoshop and css experience

Pretty boring, really, and way below what any average designer will do for a few bucks. I found this as a contrast: http://www.mettler-dent.ch
Basic layout very good and inspiring, presentation of content rather poor though.

From a corporate perspective, having an ordinary design is sometimes easier for customers to navigate the site. On the other hand, it’s sometimes hard to convince smaller companies with no web experience to pay for a great design.
